Are you looking for DIY air-dry clay room decor ideas that are beginner-friendly and don’t cost more than buying decor pieces from the store? This list of 15 air-dry clay room decor ideas was made for you.
Where to start with it?
Get that clay and start working; it’s that simple.
You will need:
- Air Dry Clay (any brand you can find).
- Water (to make your molding and shaping process easier).
- Sponge (so you can soak up access water and smooth the rough edges).
- Soft paintbrush (for finishing touches and smoothing surfaces).
- Sandpaper (to sand your creations once they’re dry).
- Sculpting kit (optional, but you’ll need it if you’re willing to sculpt a face, motif, or whatever).
- Air dry clay varnish to seal your final piece. You can get your hands on a matte or a glossy finish.
This is the air-dry clay I use, and you can get yours on Amazon here.

Air Dry Clay Project ideas First-timers must try
1.Clay wall art piece
Now I know what you’re thinking: this does not look like a beginner-friendly DIY project. But I assure you that this can be sculpted after watching a couple of TikToks or YouTube videos. And if you are someone who prefers abstract artworks, check out this blog post: How to make clay Textured 3D Art: Best Two methods
2. Perfume display
This could also work for your skincare/makeup products, but one thing to keep in mind is that you do not want to get anything that is made out of air-dry clay wet!
3. Earring holder
I love a pretty handmade jewelry holder! There are so many design ideas on Pinterest that you can use as inspiration to spice up your room and make it look like YOU.
4. Makeup brush holder
If you are a beginner, this one is pretty easy because you only need to shape a cup with your clay and add a free-form shape that will be your base tray for the DIY project.
5. A frame for your mirror/picture
This is as easy as it seems to be and pretty straightforward if you choose a simple design. Start with a raw-edged mirror, and shape your clay around it. Once you achieve your desired shape and design, you can let it air dry, sand it, and then paint it and give it a topcoat.
6. A handheld mirror
This is pretty much the same concept as the previous one, except you’re going to design a handle and add it to your shape before finalizing your project.
7. A clay clock for your wall
Did you know that you can add a clock system to your own DIY clock, and it would be a perfectly personalized and functioning piece of furniture? Try it out!
8. Desk clock
While we’re at it, you can also make a functioning desk clock. With your air-dry clay, it’s quite beginner-friendly.
9. Trendy decor pieces that could also be used as bookends
You have certainly seen the bubble letters in necklaces, bracelets, and keychains, and now you can also make them in a bigger size to add a little funky touch to your room. If you are only into functional decor, you can also use this as a bookend.
10. Coasters
If you like bringing your drinks to your room, you will enjoy this DIY project. Making your own coasters for your mugs in different styles and colors is such a fun and rewarding activity to do with friends or alone.
11. Fun lamps
You can shape a bowl with your air-dry clay and then make cutout designs in whatever shape you like. Place a candle or fairy lights inside it and enjoy the little reflections around. It sets a beautiful, moody vibe. It’s one of my all-time favorite DIY projects.
12. Mini calendars
Depending on what design you end up choosing, this project is fun and adds a whimsical touch to your room. You need to shape a base (doesn’t have to be an animal like the picture; it could be a simple arched display or maisonnette). Then you create the little rectangles with months and cubes with different day numbers going from 0 to 9.
13. Little vases with flowers in them (could also double as a bookend)
You can make an empty vase, but remember that you can’t keep water in an air-dry clay vase. So maybe make clay flowers with your vase, or just use fake flowers to fill in your vase (if you make one big enough).
14. Clay to-do list
Super easy to shape, but make sure you are using resin as a coating or a pretty strong topcoat that can tolerate writing with a marker and erasing over and over again.
15. A cute candle/incense holder
Look for inspiration online or let yourself get very creative freely. This project is very easy and would make a great gift idea as well.
Final thoughts before deciding to go with air-dry clay:
- Air-dry clay is NOT water-resistant (meaning you can mostly use your creation for decor purposes), but with a thin layer of glaze, it would not be damaged by water. Just make sure you don’t submerge the clay form or keep liquid in it all the time.
- Clay, especially air-dry, is very easy to mold and shape, so it’s the best choice for beginners and people who have never sculpted anything before.
- Air-dry clay dries pretty quickly, so make sure if you’re willing to use it again later, to wrap it in plastic wrap where the air won’t sneak in.
- You can paint your creations using acrylics or any water-based paint for the best results. Read this article to know which art paint to use for which art project.
- Always top your air-dry clay creations with glaze to keep them protected.
