I have been to cities that I incredibly loved as an artist. But I have been asked recently about the cities I have always wanted to create art in, which, weirdly enough, I never thought about. And I know you’re probably wondering what it means to want to create art in a certain city. So, let me paint the picture for you.
Rome, Italy, was one of the first cities I genuinely wanted to create art in
And I did. I sketched many landmarks, and I felt the desire to journal while discovering the sites. You can see some of those travel journal pages here. But I wanted more than that! I wanted to wake up there every day and make a series of artworks inspired by the Roman architectural gems and the amazing Renaissance art.
My Art Trip to Italy: The Vatican City and Rome
Rome was very inspiring but I was not made for hot weather so I wouldn’t choose to live there, but it remains one of the cities I have always wanted to create art in.
Vienna, Austria
I have never visited Vienna, and I am growing obsessed with it. It’s cold, it’s the place for art nouveau, and it is just “the art aesthetic.“. I have romanticized the idea of being an artist in Vienna so much that I just can’t wait for it to happen. The museums, the architecture, the libraries, the lifestyle, and everything in between just seem unreal in Austria.
Barcelona, Spain
I love the drama of the Renaissance, but I also love color. Barcelona is one of the cities that would please all aesthetics. It is happy and lively, and all that sunshine and beach vibe would make any artist want to create art in Barcelona.
Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces are all over Barcelona, and he is my favorite artist and architect. I can’t wait to see the buildings in real life and recreate them in my journal.
Idstein, Germany
If you look at the half-timbered towns in Germany and do not have the urge to make art in them, I don’t know who you are. The urge to sit right in front of these buildings and make some watercolor paintings (why not an oil painting?) is beyond me.
Utrecht, The Netherlands
This city has nothing specific that makes me want to create art in it. It’s a city that I love for what it is. The chill weather, the water canals, the seasonal change, the big windows through which you can see the little cozy kitchens and living rooms of the citizens, and the crisp night air. Utrecht has so much coziness that it lives rent-free in my mind. I want to have a little house that looks into a water canal where I can wake up and make paintings, as in a slow-living scenario. Utrecht is the city where I have felt the most present out of all the cities I have visited.
