Some people keep diaries filled with beautiful handwriting and long reflections. Others open a notebook, stare at the page… and their brain goes blank. As a visual person who loves to write, writing sometimes feels heavy to me, so I keep a visual diary instead of a written one. If you want to learn how to make a visual diary rather than a written one, this article is for you.
Let’s learn how to make a visual diary together.
What Is a Visual Diary?
A visual diary is pretty much a sketchbook or notebook where you document your life, your thoughts, your goals, your dreams, or your inner world using art instead of words (or a mix of both, if you want).
It can include:
- quick sketches
- doodles
- collages
- color swatches
- digital sketches
- stamped shapes
- paint smears
- ink experiments
- tiny objects glued in
- personal symbols
It becomes a personal archive of who you are. Not just what happened, but how it felt.
Why Keep a Visual Diary?
A visual diary is perfect if you are a visual person whose:
- Mind works better in images
- Writing skills are not the best
- Prefers to make art instead of writing
- You want a daily creative habit
- You want to document life without pressure
- You want to improve your drawing skills
- You want an intimate diary nobody else could read
It is also deeply grounding.
Sometimes you don’t need a sentence like “Today was overwhelming.” Instead, a doodle of tangled thoughts expresses the overwhelm better.
How to Make a Visual Diary?
Let’s make a page of my last trip to Vienna in my visual diary:
While visiting Vienna, I make sure to collect objects that would visually remind me of the different activities I had booked, paintings I saw, places I’ve been to, etc. As for the stuff you can’t keep tickets or receipts for, you can draw quick sketches, actual pictures you print from your camera roll, or even symbols/colors that remind you of whatever you want to document.
Remember, it doesn’t have to be aesthetically perfect because your goal is to make a visual diary (a visual map of memory), not a journal.
Conclusion
A visual diary is the perfect creative alternative to a traditional written diary because it lets you reflect and document your life using visual elements such as drawings, colors, images, textures, memories, tiny objects, and emotions. It’s not about being good at art. It’s about using visuals instead of paragraphs to express feelings.
